What are we doing in the Philippines?

Greetings from Antipolo City, near Metro Manila, Philippines. Hope that you’re all doing well in these difficult days after Katrina.

I have started teaching at Unida Biblical Seminary, a small Filipino seminary about 42 miles (a couple of hours drive) from where we live. In the second semester, I’ll be teaching a couple of New Testament classes at Presbyterian Theological Seminary and a couple at UBS. In November and January 2006, I’ll be teachng at a pastors’ training seminar at UBS. To save on gas and auto maintenance costs, I’ll arrange my schedule in both seminaries so that I’ll be teaching on consecutive days. This would enable me to stay overnight at the PTS dorm, and teach the next day at UBS (the two seminaries are about 12 miles apart.

Some of you have asked whether Evelyn and I are still with Wycliffe, and whether I’m paid for teaching at the seminaries. Yes, we’re still Wycliffe missionaries, but we’re “seconded” to Mission to the World so I could teach at PTS. My job for Wycliffe is to an advocate of Bible translation work here in Asia among the students at the two seminaries. Most of these students are now lay pastors or ministerial candidates in their denominations.

My positions at the two seminaries are purely voluntary as a missionary, so I don’t get a salary, not even an allowance. The two seminaries are both from poor denominations, especially UBS. In fact, when I have to give handouts, I shoulder the printing costs. Because the seminaries don’t have many books, some of these handouts are big.

Evelyn and I are very thankful to our God for the many supporters like you who sacrifice with your giving, and also with your prayers, especially in these days that the U.S. economy is not doing very well.

Again, we thank you for your years of being our partners in the field.
